Counting on the Schubert Octet this Sunday at Three

By Mike Giuliano
April 25, 2012

Violinist Madeline Adkins

Doing the math on the Schubert Octet speaks well for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and also for Howard County. That's because seven of the eight members of this chamber music ensemble are BSO players, and four of its members live in Howard County.

The Octet performs Sunday, April 29 at 3 p.m. for the Sundays At Three chamber music series at Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia.

Its eight members are violinist Madeline Adkins, violinist Rebecca Nichols, violist Noah Chaves, cellist Todd Thiel, bassist Robert Barney, clarinetist William Jenken, bassoonist Fei Xie and horn player Gabrielle Finck. Adkins, Barney and Xie live in Ellicott City and Jenken lives in Columbia. Thiel is the only member of the Schubert Octet who is not a member of the BSO.

Adkins, who is associate concertmaster of the BSO, is among the Howard County residents for whom a Sundays At Three gig is just a short drive away.

"I've had the pleasure of performing on the series every couple of years," Adkins says. "Sundays At Three is a gem of a chamber music series. In addition to a beautiful venue, both physically and acoustically, the audiences are so warm and knowledgeable. Musicians really perform at their best when the audience is so actively engaged."

By way of engaging the audience at its upcoming Columbia concert, the Schubert Octet performs Mozart's String Quartet in C, K. 465, "Dissonant"; and Schubert's Octet in F major, D. 803.

Adkins says, "They're both masterpieces, and we're thrilled to get the chance to perform them both on one concert."
The Schubert Octet performs Sunday, April 29 at 3 p.m. for the Sundays at Three series, at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road in Columbia. Tickets are $15; those under 18 are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Go to
